Why should I go to the dentist regularly?
Many problems with teeth are fixed early with less pain and expense when caught early on during a regular exam. Regular visits are thorough and may include cleaning, x-rays, oral cancer exam, fluoride, diagnosing gum disease, tooth decay, cracked/broken teeth and fillings, and infection.
How can I prevent cavities?
The best way to prevent cavities is healthy eating and drinking habits, along with regular dental visits, brushing (with fluoride toothpastes) and flossing twice per day, as well as placing sealants on newly erupted molars.
Why does the dentist take X-rays?
X-rays are useful to see beyond what the naked eye can observe. When you are in for a general exam, X-rays will be taken to see beneath the surface of the gums to the roots of the teeth, as well as the jawbone and other oral structures. Telltale signs of dental issues emerging can be seen on X-rays, allowing the dentist to treat the problem before it causes pain or further damage.
What can I do about sensitive teeth?
There are many toothpastes and rinses at the store that are specifically labeled to help alleviate discomfort with sensitive teeth, but sometimes that is not all one needs. There are many issues that cause teeth to be sensitive, so it is very important to have a diagnosis of the cause of your sensitive teeth first. These circumstances could include clenching and grinding, TMJ, gum disease, cracked or broken teeth and fillings, and infection of teeth or gums.
Does whitening toothpaste work?
Whitening toothpastes are good for removing mild stains from teeth associated with drinking darker colored beverages, but they do not turn your teeth to a whiter shade. To get whiter teeth, we customize your treatment based on the condition of your teeth and desires of your smile. This can be achieved by using professional products only available through your dental office, such as one hour in-office whitening, custom bleach trays with customized bleach gels and desensitizing agents, or veneers and crowns.
How long does in-office whitening last?
At Haid Dental, we provide our patients with ZOOM! Whitening Gel as an in-office whitening treatment, as well as the possibility of using custom bleach trays at home. The lasting results can vary from person to person. It may last months to years depending on the individual's habits. Your consumption of dark beverages, such as coffee, tea, red wine and colas, as well as smoking habits, determine how soon your teeth will darken again. Brushing and flossing properly along with rinses and regular dental visits can keep them brighter longer. If you have habits that cause darkening of teeth, you may need more whitening treatments to keep your teeth bright.
Why should I use a mouthguard?
Mouthguards are very important when playing most sports whether a child or an adult, recreationally or professionally. They prevent serious, painful, and expensive injuries to the mouth and teeth. Without a mouthguard, one single impact to the mouth can cause short-term problems that will affect you long-term. Trauma can lead to pain, infection, crowns, root canals, tooth removal, dental implants and surgery.
I have dental anxiety. What should I do?
You are NOT alone. The worst thing you can do is nothing. Not going for regular dental visits can lead to more severe problems and discomfort. Please let us know on your first phone call. We are very experienced in treating people with anxiety. We approach the appointment much differently once we know. We use many different adjuncts to help you get the proper dental care without being too traumatic. At Haid Dental, we use Nitrous oxide, oral sedatives, and IV sedation as a few options to help people with dental fear and anxiety. We try to keep you as comfortable and free of stress during your appointments.
