Regular dentures sit on top of your gums, using the hard and soft tissue of your mouth for support. While this may work for you, there are other solutions for replacing teeth. Implant supported dentures snap into dental implants, which provide a natural and secure fit.
What are the benefits of implant-supported dentures?
Implant-supported dentures snap into place using dental implants. This provides a natural and supported fit, and eliminates the need for adhesives or pastes to hold your dentures in place. Implant supported dentures are still removable, though, which allow for convenient cleaning of your dentures and gums. This type of denture is often used on the lower jaw, since the implants need a strong bone to support them, however, it can also be used for the upper jaw. Other benefits include:
- Improved confidence
- Stability during eating
- Bone and gum preservation
- Improved dental hygiene
- Superior esthetics
- Nutritional benefits
What types of implant-supported dentures are there and what’s the difference?
There are two types of implant-supported dentures: bar-retained dentures and ball-retained dentures. In bar-retained dentures, three or more dental implants are placed into the jaw bone. Between each implant, a metal bar runs along the gum line. Then, the dentures rest on these bars, attaching with metal clips. This secures the dentures to your jaw. Many patients prefer this option because it typically eliminates the rubbing, loosening, and discomfort associated with traditional removable dentures. Ball-retained dentures, function with a ball and socket mechanism. The base for the dentures has several sockets that line up with balls placed on dental implants in the jaw bone. These balls and sockets fit together securely, which allows for an open palate denture. Compared to other denture options, ball-retained dentures are even less likely to slip or move, which allows the patient to eat and speak regularly.
